Abstract:
Archaeological excavations were carried out as part of an overall phased evaluation of the site preceding upgrading and development of the facility. Phase 1 archaeological evaluation involved geophysical survey of three areas of the site designated as development areas: Area A, which encompassed the location of a postulated prehistoric enclosure (Horsley Croft Sub-Rectangular Enclosure); Area B; and Area C. The results of geophysical survey from Areas A, B and C did not indicate the presence of any archaeological features. In the case of Area A, however, the very disturbed ground conditions were not considered receptive to geophysical survey and the negative results were treated with caution. Phase 2 of the evaluation, based on the results of the geophysical survey, required the excavation of two trenches (three trenches were eventually excavated) across Area A to test the validity of the negative survey results given the disturbed nature of the ground. All three trenches indicated that the whole of Area A (or at least considerable portions of it) had been extensively disturbed during construction works on the site associated with present WTW buildings. The lack of any observed gradation into the bedrock (sandstone) from overlying deposits suggested that topsoil and regolith had been stripped during these works or had been at least extensively disturbed. Given these ground conditions, it was unlikely that anything other than the denuded base of any ditch associated with the putative enclosure would survive. No such feature was observed in Trenches A or C, and no artefactual material was recovered from any of the trenches to suggest early occupation on the site. Although the results of the evaluation trenching strongly suggested that any early enclosure within Area A had been obliterated or at least very badly disturbed, an intermittent watching brief should be maintained during initial groundworks for the construction of the proposed sludge press building.
