Abstract:
The evaluation comprised five trenches, which revealed the presence of significant medieval and post-medieval archaeological remains across the site. Trench 1, situated in the north-west corner of the site, contained substantial post-medieval structural remains. The south-west corner of a building was located at the east end of the trench and to the west of this, external to the building, was a granite cobble surface. A N-S orientated wall at the western end of the trench was interpreted as an external property boundary and another granite cobble surface was situated to the west of this. A pit located to the north-west of the wall contained large blocks of masonry, perhaps indicating the presence of an earlier structure. Trench 2 was located in the north-east corner of the site and post-medieval structural remains were also recorded throughout this trench. A stone culvert orientated NE-SW ran along the entire length of this trench. To the west of the culvert was a metalled surface constructed with sandstone and limestone cobbles. A small fragment of wall was located to the east of the culvert in the centre of the trench. Trench 3 was located along a grass verge separating the allotment gardens in the north of the site from an access road and structural remains were recorded at the western end of this trench. The latest phase of building comprised a brick wall and demolished hearth setting, sealed by a series of demolition deposits. The wall had been constructed upon an earlier substantial load-bearing sandstone wall, aligned N-S, possible of medieval origin. Trench 4 was located in an area of hardstanding in the north-east of the site. Post-medieval and possible medieval structural remains were recorded throughout the trench. The stone culvert identified in Trench 3 continued into this trench, and to the west of it was a wall on the same alignment. This did not appeared to have been a load-bearing and may have been a property boundary. Two sections of post-medieval wall were located in the centre of the trench and another was situated in the north-west corner. Structural remains, probably dating from the medieval period, were located in the centre of the trench. These comprised two phases of sandstone and granite floor surfaces adjacent to a linear cut, perhaps including the presence of a robbed-out wall. A portion of probable medieval masonry was also recorded in the north-west of the trench. Trench 5 was located in the south-east corner of the site in an area of hardstanding. A series of medieval ground raising deposits and large rubbish pits, which continued beyond the base of excavation, were recorded in this trench. The considerable depth of these deposits suggested that the site's natural topography sloped down to the south towards the coast. It was probable that these dumps were deposited in order to consolidate, raise and level the land. [Au(abr)]
