Abstract:
A desk-based assessment was undertaken in advance of the proposed development of the 0.42ha site. Lumley Barracks was the only military example of building work designed by the architect W.H. Brierley and were built in 1911. The barracks were not a Listed Building and were not within a Conservation Area. The original plans for the buildings were held by the Borthwick Institute for Historical Research, York. It was currently planned that the barracks would be demolished and its was therefore recommended that an RCHME Level 3 building recording be made prior to demolition. No archaeological remains had been recorded on the site and up until the erection of the Barracks in 1911, the development site was made of strip field systems, indicative of medieval farming practices and settlement. The closest archaeological remains recorded near to the site were some 250m away and comprised Roman, medieval and post-medieval remains. It was considered that a low potential existed for buried archaeological remains to exist within the footprint of the Lumley Barracks. However, the remainder of the site offered a low-medium potential for archaeological remains to exist, particularly off the frontage of Grosvenor Road. The nature of the site meant that non-intrusive survey was inappropriate and in order to identify the existence of such remains prior to development, it was considered that trial trench archaeological evaluation would be the most appropriate technique. It was also recommended that any geotechnical test pitting should be monitored, in order to assess those areas not subjected to archaeological evaluation. [Au(abr)]
