Abstract: Five trial trenches were excavated in the courtyard and bank to the east of Temple Newsam House in order to ascertain the depth of known and potential archaeological features prior to landscaping works. The trenches confirmed the position of the earlier eastern range of the house and established its depth at about 0.9m below the present courtyard. The trenches informed on the depth and status of earlier make-up deposits and former paths and established that potential archaeological deposits were unlikely to be affected by the proposed ground disturbances.
