Abstract: |
The site comprised naturally sloping ground, some of which had been subject to terracing. This may have taken place during the 19th century or during the 20th century. Any archaeological features within the terraced areas may have been partially or wholly truncated during the terracing operations. A variety of Iron Age and Roman sites were located around the site. The presence of Roman cremation burials south of the site indicated that the site may have been within an area of Iron Age and/or Roman burials, perhaps concentrated on the edge of the flat land, and above the valley of the river Hiz. The SMR also recorded a sparse spread of Saxon sites and finds in this area of Hitchin. Two finds of Saxon material had been made immediately north of the application area, perhaps indicating the presence of Saxon activity on or within the application area. No archaeological work had been undertaken in this area, and no data was available for the application area. [Au(adp)] |
