Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during the treatment and replacement of floors within a 14th century church, which had been partly rebuilt in 1854. Archaeological assistance had been summoned following the discovery of a foundation wall by contractors. Medieval walls were recorded which represented the external south wall or foundation. This had been partially removed during Victorian rebuilding. Large cracks in the Victorian flint masonry and plaster, focused on the junction between the medieval and the Victorian work, indicated structural stress resulting from the latter's inferior build and scale. Seven pieces of medieval worked stone and a vault were noted; the bricks of the vault suggested an 18th or early 19th century date. [AIP] |
