Abstract:
Archaeological survey of the council-owned woodland was undertaken. Survey comprised two discrete elements - a desk-based assessment followed by a Level 2 Survey. Wickfield Plantation was located immediately to the south of Normanton Spring, Sheffield. No previously recorded archaeological sites were identified within the woodland at the plantation during the course of the assessment. Six sites were, however, recorded within the immediate vicinity of the woodland. These included a Bronze Age sword and an abandoned quarry. On the basis of the assessment a systematic Level 2 survey of the woodland was undertaken. 13 previously unrecorded sites were identified during the course of this survey, including a series of platforms, irregular hollows and disused tracks. None of sites could be securely dated, however, all were deemed to be post-medieval or modern in date. All of the sites were characterised as sites of lesser archaeological or historical importance. Whilst the archaeological resource within the woodland was unrecognised prior to the commencement of archaeological survey, there appeared to be little or no threat to the features identified at Wickfield Plantation. Only one of the sites (Site 19) a track defined by parallel banks, showed significant signs of damage. [Au(abr)]
