Abstract: An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken following proposals for the development of the c.30ha site. The SMR detailed three sites of archaeological interest within the study site. These comprised soil marks and cropmarks identified through the analysis of aerial photography. All of these cropmarks were currently undated and their function was also unclear. A more detailed aerial photographic analysis was undertaken as part of this assessment. Anomalies were also identified by the survey which suggested that there was a likelihood that archaeological remains may be encountered during groundworks. These features may include enclosures and linear features which were likely to have dated from the late prehistoric or Roman periods. Later remains, possibly dating from the late medieval and post-medieval period were also identified and included coal-extraction and ploughing regimes. It was considered that the site had a potential for the existence of archaeological remains. The features identified on the site through the analysis of aerial photographs were currently undated and it was expected that the local planning authority may require further information. [Au(abr)]
