Abstract:
Proposals had been brought forward for the re-development of a parcel of land. An earlier desk-based assessment had established that this part of Berwick had been occupied since about 1300, with the land being used for both building and as open ground. In the western part of the area archaeological deposits of considerable thickness had already been observed in an earlier evaluation. Three trenches were excavated within the western portion of the site. Each trench revealed a considerable depth of garden soil containing, in the main, post-medieval finds. The deposits were cut by modern drains in all of the trenches. In area 1 a post-medieval pit was found and medieval layers encountered at maximum depth. These were not excavated further as they extended below the depth of anticipated ground disturbance. Area 2 contained two layers of post-medieval garden soil. Area 3 contained less build up of garden soil; below these deposits were post-medieval levelling layers. No medieval cut features were found, but some earlier pottery was recovered as residual material in post-medieval layers. It was likely that there were medieval deposits within the site, but these were well buried below post-medieval garden soils and levelling layers. It was recommended that the groundworks for the new buildings at the rear of the old Vicarage should be carried out under archaeological supervision. [Au(abr)]
