Abstract: The evaluation consisted of three hand excavated trenches which were placed to the east, west and north of the standing Salvation Army Citadel Building. The area of the evaluation lay within the vicus of Roman Castleford, southwest of the fort. Two major excavations in 1974 and 1980-2 identified extensive Roman activity immediately to the east and the south. Archaeology was encountered only in the northern part of the three trenches. Two Roman features, possibly structural, were cut into the natural subsoil below modern/post-medieval overburden. [Au]
