Abstract:
An archaeo-geophysical survey was commissioned prior to the extension of open-cast mining at Maiden's Hall. Magnetometry proved to be an appropriate technique to investigate the presence of buried features of cultural and archaeological significance and no further geophysical survey was recommended. Examples of ridge and furrow were detected, although a medieval origin could not be ascribed. Many fields, especially those east of the C107 road, appeared to have evidence of recent disturbance, particularly in those areas close to present mining activity. Some of the artefact scatters, including possible concentrations, may have resulted from sub-surface disturbance by activities particularly associated with drainage. That, and the removal and/or disturbance of topsoil, may have been instrumental in degrading some parts of the survey area. A number of linear features were detected within several survey grids, but most of these appeared to relate to modified drainage systems. Within Transect D, a large 'pit' was detected which may have been a pre-industrial bell-pit. Within all transects a large number of positive anomalies, possibly pits were detected. However, most did not have any characteristics or distribution patterns which could have identified them as archaeologically significant. The entire survey area of 12 transects contained numerous pits, linear features and bipolar anomalies, many of which must of been of relatively modern origin, perhaps associated with small-scale extraction of coal or with drainage improvement. A number of features which should be investigated with test pits or excavation trenches were also identified. [Au(abr)]
