Abstract: A watching brief was carried out during the excavation of trenches for a water main at the site of an extension to a golf course. Several cropmarks and earthworks had been recorded in the surrounding area, including two Scheduled Ancient Monuments; these consisted of a Romano-British settlement and an enclosure. Cropmarks interpreted as a 'Celtic' field system had been noted at the site itself. During the watching brief, no archaeological features were recorded, although three pieces of struck flint dating from the Mesolithic or Early Neolithic were recovered. It was noted that the lack of archaeological remains observed may have reflected the limited scope for recording afforded by the minimally intrusive pipelaying method employed. [AIP]
