Abstract:
An archaeological desk-top assessment was undertaken of the site prior to the proposed development of the site. It was concluded that there was a potential for the limited survival of archaeological deposits from Roman, Saxon, medieval and post-medieval periods across the site. The site was located in an area of known Roman activity between two major Roman roads. Roman burials, pits and ditches and Roman artefacts had been recorded in the area. The site lay close to the area associated with Saxon Lundenwic and Saxon finds had been recovered within 100m of the site. Evidence for the cultivation of the site during the medieval period had been recovered and streets were being created in the area during the medieval period. By the mid-16th century the site area was partially built up and by the mid-17th century the site was known to have been fully built up. Groundworks associated with the construction of a new basement would disturb, or remove any surviving archaeological deposits. The report suggested that further assessment, in the form of limited scale test-pitting, be undertaken to indicate the quantity of any remains which may be present and their location and significance to allow appropriate decisions to be made about the treatment of the archaeological resource.
