Abstract:
<summary>Subsequent to the initial archaeological investigations in the cellar of 20 Church Street ({italon}Hereford Archaeology Series, Report No 99{italoff}), the developers commissioned a further evaluation as they wished to lower the floor level further than had initially been anticipated. Accordingly two trenches (one a continuation of Trench 2, dug earlier in the year) were excavated to an average depth of 0.18m, such that at their highest point both were 2.33m below ground floor level, so as to determine the nature and importance of the surviving archaeology. The cellar floor comprises a series of complex layers, all within the depth excavated being of post-medieval date. They are probably the result of regular re-levelling of the floor, using material such as clay, building debris, and redeposited natural gravel. Further traces of foundations for an east-west partition wall were exposed, probably of 16th or 17th century date. Evidence for the propping of ground floor timbers during the 18th century was also encountered. The cellar wall was also examined, and found to be sat on natural gravel about 300mm below cellar floor level. The excavations did not produce any definite evidence for the date(s) of construction of the cellar. It is assumed to be of two different periods - Cellar A, underneath the western part of the 14th century hall and probably also of 14th century date, and Cellar B, underneath the northern extension, of a later date. {italon}AIP{italoff} {italon}SMR Primary Record Numbers:{italoff} HWCM436
