Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out at the proposed site of a restaurant, petrol station and parking area. The remains of a cottage, farmstead or smallholding of the late 17th-18th century or earlier had been discovered within the proposal site, whilst a number of sites of archaeological interest had been recorded in the surrounding area. These included a Late Bronze Age settlement, medieval and post-medieval parks, a water mill, a homestead moat, kiln sites and two brickyards. During the evaluation, a shallow undated ditch was revealed, and a small assemblage of 17th century pottery was recovered from the topsoil of the trench closest to the remains of the cottage. It was concluded that archaeological remains did not survive across most of the area to be affected by the development, and that the surviving remains associated with the cottage were confined to a small area in the south-eastern corner of the site.
