Abstract: A watching brief was carried out during groundworks. The site lay close to the site of a medieval chapel and the excavated remains of a cobbled floor surface of medieval date and it was thought that the excavations might disturb archaeological remains relating to the medieval period. The area of the new house had been stripped of topsoil prior to foundations being excavated. The majority of the trenches for the new house had already been excavated and the lower parts of the walls had been constructed at the time of the watching brief. No features were observed in the sections. The topsoil from the trench had been removed and spread out in the field to the east of the proposed new house. This was examined for finds and was seen to contain large quantities of modern brick and tile fragments as well as occasional fragments of 18th-20th century pottery. A spoilheap on site, immediately north-east of the house foundations, was also examines. This contained similar finds, none of which were recovered. [Au(abr)]
