Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during groundworks at the site of a housing development. A 19th century or earlier field boundary had been noted at the site, and a standing building, now used as a scout hut, remained; this had been part of a 19th century farmstead. During the watching brief, two walls dating from the 16th century or slightly earlier were recorded. Two paths may have been of a similar date. The standing building and the remains of a second building and a yard appeared to date from the 18th century, when a full farmstead had been established. A building survey of the scout hut was undertaken prior to its demolition, and several construction and alteration phases were identified. A foundation trench for the hut contained a small amount of 17th and 18th century pottery and the neck of a bottle of a similar date. Possible 14th-16th century pottery was also found. [AIP] |
