Abstract: |
15 trial trenches were excavated in respect of a planning application to extend the existing quarry. The evaluation revealed an extensive scatter of Early Mesolithic flint in the topsoil and subsoil; Early Mesolithic flintwork was also present in seven tree-throw holes. In addition, a small number of later Neolithic and Early Bronze Age flints were also recovered. Eight ditches were located, several of which ran parallel to modern boundaries and may have represented the medieval precursors to these. Two of these ditches could have been early in date, as the latest material recovered from them was early to middle Saxon. Three other undated ditches in the east did not conform to the modern field layout. A single undated pit was also uncovered. [Au(adp)] |
