Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out at a proposed development site within the medieval town of Marlow. In the surrounding area, two Neolithic or Iron Age burials, prehistoric ring ditches and an enclosure had been recorded, whilst a 17th century church near the site occupied the site of an earlier, medieval one. During the evaluation, a chalk-built cellar of probable post-medieval date and a series of chalk- and brick-lined wells were recorded. These cut through soil layers containing medieval and Tudor pottery. To the rear of the site, a ditch, a post hole, a pit and a gully indicating late 18th and 19th century activity were revealed. Archaeological deposits in one area appeared to have been destroyed by terracing, possibly in the 19th or early 20th century. [AIP] |
