Abstract: |
An investigation was undertaken regarding a Second World War bomber, which had crashed just east of the village of Staunton in the Vale. The investigation was carried out at the request of Sid Baggaley, a retired local farmer, of Chapel Side Farm. Sid Baggeley had witnessed the accident during the war, and had led RAF recovery teams to the crash site. For years, he had kept several pieces of wreckage from the plane, and out of curiosity wanted to know more about the aircraft and its crew. Two members of the Farndon Archaeological Research Institute carried out the main investigation. The FARI team successfully managed to put together a history surrounding an almost forgotten aircraft, which crashed shortly before 11pm on February 18th 1943. The story surrounding the tragic loss of Lancaster W4270 could now be passed on to any interested parties thus adding a tiny piece of history to the village of Staunton in the Vale. [Au(abr)] |
