Abstract: Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a motorway service area identified that a SAM comprising a rectangular, internally banked moated site of medieval date lay 30m to the east. Other sites recorded within a radius of 1km included three medieval manors, a post-medieval brick kiln, a restored 15th century church and the findspots of a prehistoric flint flake and a prehistoric axe head. Two Roman roads were believed to have passed through the area, and a registered park and garden lay nearby. It was concluded that the proposal site had a low archaeological potential, although discussions with the county planning archaeologist indicated that its potential may have been greater than had been indicated by the SMR. The wood had undergone no development and had not been open to the public, so that the potential for chance discovery within the site had been slight. It was recommended that a detailed ground survey should be undertaken, and that a geophysical survey should be carried out if ground conditions were favourable. It was further recommended that advice should be sought from English Heritage concerning the likely effects of the proposed development on the setting of the SAM. [AIP]
