Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out at a site which lay along the route of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link. Previous excavations immediately to the north and south had revealed early prehistoric flints, evidence of a probable Late Bronze Age settlement, and Iron Age features. During the evaluation, a pit containing Mesolithic or Neolithic flints was revealed, and Late Bronze Age pottery was recovered. Late Iron Age or early Roman features, Late Iron Age pottery and a few medieval sherds were found. A rectilinear pattern of small gullies containing a worked flint and a small number of late prehistoric potsherds continued a pattern observed during the adjacent work to the north. It was concluded that excavation of some areas would be necessary, and that preservation in situ at the west end of the site, in the area of an early prehistoric pit and a later ditch, could be possible.
