Abstract: An archaeological excavation, covering some 440sq. m, was undertaken prior to the development of the site. An earlier evaluation had produced evidence for later prehistoric activity. The earliest finds consisted of further struck flints and a pit that had apparently been used for small-scale iron working. Radiocarbon analysis of charcoal from this feature had produced an Early to Mid Iron Age date. Several significant medieval features were exposed, in particular two ditches, the larger some 22m long and 3.8m wide. These were assumed to represent the boundaries of 13th century properties fronting onto the High Street. In the southern part of the site there was a probable beam slot for a timber building, believed to have dated to the later 13th or 14th century. There was little evidence of earlier post-medieval activity, although a probable later 16th century Nuremburg jeton was recovered. [Au(abr)]
