Abstract:
Desk-based survey revealed a site from which there was no known archaeology. However, the development site was located in an area of extensive medieval and post-medieval activity and was part of the medieval settlement of Lyddington. The village was well represented in the documentary record with a mix of houses and commercial buildings of largely 17th century and later date dominating the present Main Street. There was unfortunately no early map evidence useful in assessing the potential of the development site. Nevertheless, the present regular linear row form of the village suggested it may have been planned as such and the remains of the market cross indicated the presence of a market from possibly the 13th century. The report suggested that the absence of evidence from the site, including early structural remains, previous discoveries and its situation including the backlands of post-medieval settlement on Main Street, indicated that the site was unlikely to contain archaeology which would warrant preservation in situ. However, ground inspection during the desk-based assessment confirmed the potential for further survey and that the most appropriate methodology would be a structured watching brief. [Au(abr)]
