Abstract: Analysis of the excavated evidence enabled the development of Bristol's medieval Portwall to be traced back over the course of around 750 years and eight major phases, several of which were broken down into further sub-phases. Phase 1 represented the contemporary construction of the Portwall and the Watergate in the middle of the 13th century. It seemed that the Watergate was a postern gate providing the Knights Templar access to and from their extra-mural lands.[Au(abr)]
