Abstract:
The final phase of the archaeological investigations at Church Farm, Chilton was carried out in May & June 1997. An area of 1.85ha of the 10ha site was excavated revealing the north-western and north-eastern sides of a late prehistoric enclosure, first identified during evaluations in 1996. Two entrances were identified, through one of which a track, complete with wheel ruts, ran. The majority of the features excavated were post holes, among which at least one other roundhouse structure was identified, adding to that identified during an earlier evaluation. Many of the post holes appeared to form linear structures, which included a double line orientated north-west towards one of the entrances. A rectangular post-built structure provided further evidence for the Late Saxon/early medieval village which originally surrounded St Mary's Church. [Au(abr)]
