Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during pile-probing at a development site, which lay between a well-preserved 8th century site and the findspot of a 7th century pot. Greenish brown silty clay deposits, which had contained two sherds of 10th-11th century pottery, had been recorded during the monitoring of trial pits in 1994. It was not certain whether the deposits had been alluvial, or had represented the fill of features. During the 1997 watching brief, a black clay loam containing ceramic building material and other construction debris, pottery and slag dating from the 17th to the 19th century was recorded. This overlay the greenish clay layer, from which a piece of pig bone was recovered. It was concluded that the clay was likely to have represented an area of low-lying wetland to the north of Lundenwic, and that the overlying 17th-19th century layers had probably represented garden soils relating to properties depicted on maps dating from 1658.
