Abstract: |
The desk-based assessment found a high potential for the area of proposed development to contain archaeology dating to the prehistoric period and a moderate potential for the site to contain archaeology dating to the Roman and early medieval periods. Evidence suggested that the site was probably located at the edge of the historic centre of Kingston during the early and later medieval periods, possibly lying within open fields around the town. Maps from the 17th and 18th centuries showed buildings on parts of the site up to the mid 20th century, when they were demolished and a large cold store building was constructed. The building was demolished before 1870. A geotechnical survey had revealed the presence of Made Ground across the site to a depth of between 0.80-1.50m below ground level, beneath which was natural brickearth and natural gravel. The Made Ground probably represented levelling or demolition layers but may have contained archaeological horizons. Ground lowering for the car park, ground beams and pile caps would entail the removal of all Made Ground and up to 1.2m of natural brickearth. Any archaeology located with these deposits would also be removed. Insertion of ground beams and pile caps for the proposed Sports Hall was unlikely to extend beyond the Made Ground and there was unlikely to be a significant archaeological impact. The proposed insertion of ground beams and pile caps beneath the northern end of the existing Engineering Building would have an uncertain archaeological impact; no geotechnical survey had been carried out on this part of the site and consequently it was not known if modern Made Ground was present. The extent of ground disturbance from the existing foundations was not known. The piled foundations for each of the three developments would extend to a depth of 20m below ground level. Any archaeological deposits that may be present within the footprint of each individual pile would be impacted. The piles were generally less than 1m in diameter. [Au(abr)] |
