Abstract:
An excavation was carried out following an evaluation, at a proposed development site which lay within an Archaeological Priority Area. The evaluation trenches had revealed evidence of prehistoric activity in the form of worked flints scattered in a medieval ploughsoil and in overlying post-medieval make-up dumps and garden soils. A post-medieval dog burial had also been found. The excavation revealed a number of prehistoric features, comprising a series of parallel shallow ditches from which struck flints, including a blade, were recovered. A post-hole and the remains of a possible hearth were associated with the ditch system. The next phase of activity was represented by a series of layers which incuded flint scatters and pottery fragments. This material was representative of a medieval ploughsoil. The high proportion of both burnt and struck flint present within these deposits appeared to have been derived from features and layers associated with the prehistoric features of the preceding phase. It was concluded that the site was likely to have been occupied for a long time during the later prehistoric periods. Although the only, very tentative, dating of the features was Late Mesolithic to Early Neolithic, flints recovered from both the medieval ploughsoil and the post-medieval dumps and garden soils suggested that occupation had continued until at least the Early Bronze Age.
