Abstract:
The evaluation consisted of a preliminary topographic survey, sample trenching and augering. Several flints of possible Neolithic/Bronze Age date were recovered, but possibly the earliest feature recorded was an east-facing arc-shaped arrangement of 5 small blocks of dolomitic conglomerate bedrock forming a 'kerb' approximately 3 metres across. Towards the centre of the arc were several smaller stones, which possibly represented the remains of a cairn or a setting for a larger stone which had been removed. No dating evidence was found in association with the feature, but it was suggested that they represented a small monument of probable Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age date which was constructed next to a spring and surrounding marshy area. A Romano-British ditch dating to the 3rd-4th century was revealed and was identified as being part of an enclosure boundary or field system associated with a nearby villa. Several stone filled french drains were also revealed and were dated to the post-medieval period. [AIP]
