Abstract:
An evaluation was carried out at the proposed site of a retail outlet, within the medieval and post-medieval town of Brentwood. Desk-top study revealed that a number of Listed Buildings lay in the vicinity of the proposal site, and that the ruins of a chapel built in 1221 lay on the south side of the High Street, which passed to the south. The High Street itself was believed to have followed the course of a Roman road. The remains of an iron works founded by 1872 lay close to the north-eastern site boundary. During the evaluation, pottery of medieval and early post-medieval date was recovered and a single pit dating from the 15th-16th century was recorded. The location of the site, behind the backlands and away from the medieval street frontage, and the results of the evaluation suggested that occupation in the medieval period had not extended as far as the development area. The absence of any buried soil horizons across much of the site suggested that the topsoil had been removed and the site possibly levelled prior to the construction of former buildings. [Au(adp)]
