| Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out at the proposed site of a cricket pavilion which lay close to Babington House, a 17th century house within a Grade II Listed park. Archaeological features and medieval finds had been recorded during an earlier evaluation and a watching brief in the vicinity of the house. The proposal site lay to the south-east of St Margaret's Church and churchyard, which had been in use since medieval times. A deserted medieval village, an ice house and a cropmark had also been recorded in the area. During the evaluation, a very small post-hole, a stake-hole, a possible mortar pit and some regular, shallow plough marks were revealed. These were considered to be of 18th-19th century or later date. Artefacts found incuded 18th-19th century pottery, 19th century mortar and a small fragment of window glass which was probably medieval. [AIP] |
