Abstract: The report concluded that the site had considerable archaeological potential, being situated in the area of a Roman cemetery. Knowledge of the Smithfield area in the post-Roman to early modern periods was scarce and any archaeological data the study of the site could provide would have been of considerable local significance. Although there was limited information available regarding the existing basement levels, it was considered that, although they may have caused considerable trucation of archaeological deposits, there was still a likelihood of limited areas of horizontal stratigraphy and deeply cut features surviving in some areas. An open yard area along the northern limit of the site was considered to have been of higher archaeological potential, with the possibility that extensive remains of the Roman cemetery may have survived. The report recommended that an archaeological test pit evaluation of all areas of the site be carried out in order to determine the exact depth and nature of any archaeological remains. [Au(adp)]
