Evaluation took the form of trial excavation in the Phase II Reclamation Area. The removal of slag heaps and structures associated with the former steel plant was anticipated to have an impact on any surviving remains, in particular a moated site associated with the medieval village of Little Conesby. Although 16 trenches were excavated, the discovery of significant archaeological remains was restricted to those trenches in the vicinity of the moated site. The positions of the western, northern and eastern arms of the moat were established, while the possible leat serving the moat to the south was located. Pottery recovered from the fill dated from the 14th to 19th centuries. A number of stone-built foundation sand walls were recorded in a narrow trench cut across the northern part of the moat platform, most of which was sealed beneath rubble spreads testifying to the buildings' demolition. Sherds of pottery associated with these spreads suggested disuse and demolition of the buildings in the 16th century, though brick and roof tile amongst the rubble, or re-used in the structures, suggested structural activity on the site as far back as the 13th or 14th centuries. At Conesby Quarry, the area of the former railway sidings was to be quarried of its sand and mudstone as part of the Phase III restoration on that site. Evaluation here took the form of a close interval coring survey to test for the presence of archaeological horizons within the sand. A thin organic horizon was identified at the base of the sand and samples of organic material were submitted for more detailed examination. At the northern end of the site, the horizon was predominantly peat-like in character, though further south, at a slightly higher level, it was more humic in nature, and was found to contain traces of charred vegetation, a possible indicator of human activity nearby.
