Abstract:
The report presented the results of an archaeological desk-based assessment which was conducted in advance of the proposed removal of the existing warehouses and their replacement with 27 apartments in a new building. There were no historic or statutorily protected buildings in the vicinity of the site. The buildings presently on the site were of 19th and 20th century date. There were no indications that the proposed development areas was occupied during the prehistoric or Romano-British periods, though archaeological evidence of the latter period may have remained in the area to the south-west. The site was close to an important early ecclesiastical centre, the 7th century monastery now marked by St Hild's church. During the high medieval period, the town developed along a street on either side of Mill Dam; it remained here until the later 18th century. The site of the proposed development lay a little to the north of this area. In the 1760s a planned town was lain out around a new market place, and this site lay at the western end of that development. It had not been possible to determine the extent of cellars and other below-ground disturbance associated with the existing buildings. The proposed development had the potential to impact upon archaeological resources through the construction of foundations and associated. [Au(abr)]
