Abstract: An archaeological evaluation was undertaken on the site of Phase 8 of the Chertsey Revitalisation Scheme. The evaluation involved the opening of 11 machine-excavated trial trenches and a limited watching brief. The north west corner of the site produced the greatest concentration of archaeological features, and these were either linear or pit-type features of medieval date. One large feature was recorded in Trench 5 and this was probably a large ditch or pond. The preservation in the lower fill of this feature was exceptional, with finds including a nearly complete medieval wooden bowl. A number of discreet medieval pit-type features were recorded in trenches 2, 3 and 9. In addition to this medieval activity, two of the features in Trench 6 contained pottery which clearly pre-dated the medieval period, although the exact date was unclear. Trenches 1, 4, 10 and 11 did not contain any archaeology. The natural across the site was sandy gravel beneath brickearth. In general this was sealed by a buried topsoil deposit which presumably related to the orchards which occupied the site until the late 19th century. [Au(abr)]
