Abstract: |
The watching brief was undertaken during drainage work within the churchyard. The church dated to the 15th century, although a 12th century origin was likely. Foundations of buttresses attached to the north aisle were observed. A deposit of demolition debris was found on the north side of the church. Close to the retaining wall of the churchyard sandy natural strata was exposed in the base of the trench. South of the Church: Part of a stone and tile construction was recorded at the southeast corner of the porch. This was probably the foundations for the buttress of the porch. In front of the porch there was a layer of clunch. This was interpreted as construction debris, evidence of a working area for stone preparation. Adjacent to the south aisle a brick structure was observed which probably formed the base for a grave slab or tomb. [Au(abr)] |
