Abstract: |
An air photo investigation was undertaken in advance of the development of the site. The report concluded that the features mapped in and around the area of proposed development illustrated the considerable potential for the disruption of archaeologically sensitive areas by any ground works. The absence of crop mark, soilmark or earthwork evidence in any part of the proposed development area should not be taken as proof of an absence of archaeological deposits. Few features were identified to the immediate north of Selby Road. It was likely that poorer drainage in the area, compounded by the complex cropmarks of the field drains impeded the visibility of any archaeological features in this area. The prehistoric field system revealed at Swillington Common may have extended into this area. In other parts woodland and the remains of later cultivation may have masked prehistoric, Roman and early medieval features. [Au(adp)] |
