Abstract: |
Investigations at Myers Road in 1996 and 1999, in advance of residential development, afforded us with the first archaeological window to the settlement at Potton in the early medieval period. The discoveries were made on a piece of marginal land situated about 0.5km north of the present town centre and a comparable distance along the road west of the church. This added a new dimension to the nature and location of the early village, inferring that settlement was dispersed to some degree along at least one main route-way, the main focus being in proximity to the manor. The authors postulated a model of settlement change at Potton providing corroborative evidence for a long suspected 'shift' in the focus of settlement sometime prior to the second decade of the 13th century.
