Abstract:
The desk-based assessment considered the archaeological potential of the site, and the likely impact on this of the proposed redevelopment. The report concluded that the site was located in an area of archaeological potential for all periods, although existing and previous basements were likely to have caused a considerable degree of truncation. Two single basement areas at the south end of the site were identified as having the highest potential, though in the south-west corner further truncation may have been caused by extensive foundations for the existing building. At the north end of the site (1 Bartholomew Lane), the triple basement would have removed all archaeological deposits. However, narrow strips of archaeological deposits may have survived around the perimeter of this property. Across the remainder of the site, the truncated remains of deep cut features may have survived in both the single and double basement areas. The principal impact of the proposed works was therefore considered to be in the area of the existing north-east single basement, where up to 1.5m of horizontal deposits may be removed as well as deeper cut features. Any additional works around the perimeter of 1 Bartholomew Lane could affect up to 0.50m of archaeological deposits. The report concluded that due to the uncertainty regarding the extent of archaeological survival on the site, further investigation (field evaluation) should take place in the areas of potential identified in this report.
