Abstract: |
An archaeological assessment was undertaken of the entire county Durham coastline in order to determine the nature and extent of the known and unknown archaeological resource, to recommend further evaluation works, where necessary, and to provide outline historical and archaeological information as a basis for the presentation of the resource to the public. This was as a result of the proposed Millennium Coastline Project. The report concluded that the coastline and its hinterland had produced a range of archaeologically important finds and it was clear that the area of the Millennium Coastline Project included landscapes and sites of high archaeological potential. Finds from within the project area, as well as its vicinity, pointed to the fact that the coastline was used throughout the prehistoric and Roman periods. In particular the evidence indicated that the coastal margin was an especially significant centre of activity and occupation during the Mesolithic and Neolithic periods. The report outlined the interpretative potential and recommended a number of mitigation measures. [Au(adp)] |
