Abstract:
A desk top assessment of a proposed gravel extraction site was undertaken. Two complexes of cropmarks at the site were Scheduled Ancient Monuments (SAM 140 and SAM 141/142); features outside the Scheduled areas had also been recorded. One complex was thought to represent a Neolithic cursus, possibly associated with Late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age round barrows. An enclosure and trackway thought to date to the Iron Age were also present. The second complex comprised settlement enclosures, trackways and boundaries of probable Iron Age and Roman date. Evidence of ridge and furrow cultivation had also been noted at the site. Excavations in the surrounding area had revealed evidence for human activity dating from the Neolithic to the Roman period. Early medieval cemeteries and foci of medieval and post-medieval activity had also been recorded. It was concluded that the entire site was of potential archaeological importance, and that an evaluation would be necessary. [Au(abr)]
