Abstract: Four 30m by 1.8m trial trenches were excavated to a depth of 0.3-0.55m in advance of the proposed residential development and the redevelopment of the Ashmole School itself. Trial excavation pits (sondages) were dug at the end of each trench to determine the stratigraphy of the underlying natural deposits, to a maximum depth of 1.6m. All four trenches revealed the same soil deposition sequence: natural clay was overlain by natural brickearth, which was overlain by a probable plough zone of mixed brickearth and topsoil, which in turn was overlain by topsoil. No archaeological features were observed either cut into the brickearth or the topsoil. Several modern drains were observed running roughly north-south across the site. Services running roughly east-west at the northern end of Trench 3, and two rows of trees several metres to the north of these, prohibited excavation in the north eastern corner of the site.
