Abstract: This was a site of known archaeological significance. Despite a depressing amount of recent building rubble and the remains of badly constructed 19th and 20th century outhouses there was one discovery of national significance. The author believed the excavations uncovered a 4.5m section of the Friary precinct wall. On further excavation, the blocks proved to be the tap slag blocks and so were relegated to the 19th century. Perhaps of equal importance was that the alluvium, the natural subsoil at this point, probably represented the saltings at the edge of the River Mersey during the medieval period. This fertile soil was tilled for crops until the late 18th century. [Au]
