Abstract:
A watching brief was carried out in two stages during groundworks for a new school building, at a site which lay immediately east of the graveyard of a parish church. A site visit was made in September 1996 following the removal of a skeleton by workmen. A second skeleton was revealed, and a number of ditch or pit sections were observed within the foundation trenches. Pottery from these features ranged in date from the early 12th century to the 13th/14th century. It was concluded that the two burials had once lain within the churchyard, and that the features observed in the south-east corner of the site had probably been associated with secular settement, suggesting that the graveyard had not extended into this area, at least after the 12th century. Monitoring of groundworks associated with drains and ramps was subsequently undertaken, in 1997. A medieval gully and a post-medieval boundary ditch were observed. Pottery finds appeared to confirm that settlement had been established by the 12th century. A well which may have been of medieval or early post-medieval origin and a fragmentary animal burial which seemed to have been disturbed by 19th century pits were also recorded. [AIP]
