Traces of gold thought to be contemporary with the tool they were found on (from the gravegoods assemblage) extends the incumbent's possible title range to metalworker, Wessex goldworker or shaman -- though it is conceded that he may have been all three.

Work by the South Cadbury Environs Project shows that analysing the alignment and morphology of large-scale geophysical data plots can enhance diachronic and synchronic interpretation of a landscape. A pilot study demonstrates that discontinuity of boundary systems features as strongly as continuity in succeeding landscapes.

Michael Jubb, Director of Programmes of the Arts and Humanities Research Board, (343--6) outlines the AHRB approach to the funding of archaeological research, in an invited response to an earlier Antiquity editorial (September, 1999) and the current crisis in archaeological research funding. Barry Cunliffe (347), Sebastian Payne (347--8) and Colin Renfrew (348) reply from the archaeologists' perspective, with the AHRB's outlined view giving cause for concern. The question of whether archaeology and science-based archaeology should be re-integrated for the purpose of funding application is raised. The current funding situation is not seen as satisfactory.
