Abstract
Practical evaluation of a field test for the identification of ancient vegetable tanned leathers
Carol Van Driel-Murray
17 - 21
A simple method of identifying the presence of vegetable tannins in desiccated skin products enables large scale testing of leather goods from archaeological contexts in both museum and field situations. The reaction is highly effective in spot testing for the presence of surface applications, for multiple testing of technologically complex items, and for the rapid assessment of conservation treatment. Technologically exact descriptions of objects can be prepared in field conditions. Widespread application may shed light on the origin and development of vegetable tanning in the ancient world.
