Surface treatments of cuir bouilli collections
Laura Davies
Robert Payton
36 - 44
Investigates the nature of cuir bouilli (shaped leather which has been made irreversibly hard and less permeable by wet heat) using historical literature, practicing craftsmen, and by examining collections. Demonstrates that increased knowledge about the material and the use of optical and UV microscopy of cross-sections underpin decisions about the treatment of different leather surfaces, including the removal of leather dressing by careful solvent swabbing.
A comparison of light-accelerated ageing regimes in some galleries and museums
David Saunders
Jo Kirby
95 - 104
Describes nine types of accelerated light-ageing regimes, used by five institutions in the UK and one in the Netherlands. Following light exposure, samples of painted paper and textile revealed differences in colour. These differences are discussed in terms of the spectral power distribution of the light sources and the average temperature of ageing.
