Abstract
Looking to the hills
A report of September's on-site demonstration staged against on-going erection of a telecommunications mast adjacent to Cairnpapple Hill, an important prehistoric monument (see also 94/135). Some of the prominent protesters are named and the media coverage of the issue is noted. The loophole in planning regulations which may allow the construction to proceed is also discussed.
Digging the monks on the May
A small medieval monastery, St Adrian's Priory on the Isle of May, is being investigated in its entirety in a project led by Fife Regional Council. So far excavation centred on the monastic church has revealed a post-medieval smithy and forge, a burial, and large quantities of artefacts, including fragments possibly of Scarborough pottery. Work will eventually include the investigation of an adjacent seventeenth-century settlement and a programme of environmental sampling, the latter carried out in association with Scottish Natural Heritage.
Carved Stones Committee
Announces that HS has set up a new multi-organisational Committee to promote the conservation of carved stones of all periods. The membership and aims of the Committee are outlined.

Who's who in Scottish archaeology part 11: archaeology units continued
Gives details of the history, role and personnel of three organisations. The Fife Archaeological Index (FAI) is one of the pioneering Sites and Monuments Records in Scotland; St Andrews Heritage Services is a small unit run in parallel with FAI; Scotia Archaeology Limited was Scotland's first archaeological company, incorporated in 1990.
Flint quarry findings
Reports on the National Museum of Scotland's research in the Den of Boddam. The project has identified the methods of extraction and processing that were used, and it has been shown that extraction pits can be found beneath cultivated fields adjacent to the site (see also 94/306).
Biggar Common -- excitement and frustration
The circumstances of the discovery of a Neolithic settlement, by a group of Young Archaeologists from Biggar Museum, are described. The site came to light only after the land had been ploughed for the first time and the problem of coping with recording such sites is discussed. The Biggar Common site was investigated by stripping the new ploughsoil for sieving and excavating the in situ features. Pottery was recovered, largely from the sieved soil.
Exploring the Wolf's Lair in Speyside
Reports the results of a joint underwater survey around the thirteenth-century Lochindorb Castle, carried out in August 1993 by STUA and the Lochindorb Heritage Project (LHP). This was the island stronghold of Alexander Stewart, `Wolf of Badenoch'. Evidence of stone and timber structures was found, along with a small boat and trebuchet shot. The work was prompted by the discovery, in 1992, of a large ceramic jar on the loch bed.
St Monans saltpans windmill restoration
The eighteenth-century windmill serving the saltpans has been restored. Excavation of the adjacent bonded storehouse and cottages is proposed.
