Report on the excavation, in situ recording, dismantling and conservation of the well-preserved remains of a boat, discovered during survey work in advance of construction on the Gwent Levels. The boat exhibits many features characteristic of the Romano-Celtic boatbuilding tradition, and detailed descriptions are given of its structure, the boatbuilding techniques used in its construction, and a theoretical reconstruction. Separate chapters discuss the palaeoenvironmental evidence and the finds and materials associated with the boat. Environmental indicators suggest that it was located in a tidal channel. The report also includes chapters on seafaring; interpretation and local context; and wider perspectives; summaries in Welsh, French and German; and a glossary. Special sections discuss |
